Dr. Andrea L. Rotzien, PhD, received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Florida, her Master’s degree from Ball State University, and her Doctorate from Texas A&M University. She completed her internship/residency at the Medical College of Georgia and a doctoral fellowship in child clinical/pediatric psychology at Columbus Children’s Hospital, where she served as adjunct faculty at The Ohio State University. She taught graduate and undergraduate courses as a tenure track professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for several years.
In 2001, Dr. Rotzien moved to Grand Rapids and became a tenured professor at GVSU before returning to full-time private practice. As an academic, Dr. Rotzien's clinical and research interests included: educating others on research based techniques for treating anxiety and depression in children adolescents and adults, understanding the relationship between emotional regulation and poor body image/eating disordered behavior, self injury, adjusting to disability, and the impact of psychology in legal situations. Dr. Rotzien continues to teach for GVSU as an adjunct professor, most recently assisting in the further development of a class on the psychology of disabilities for doctoral students in the physical therapy program. After leaving GVSU, Dr. Rotzien worked at BRAINS and then later developed her own practice on the north side of town. In 2014, she joined forces with Drs. Dennis, Hewitt and VandenHoek to found Eastside Psychology Group. She is excited for the opportunity to work with like minded, yet diverse, professionals.
Dr. Rotzien has been a licensed clinical psychologist for 19 years and has a thriving practice due to her successful outcomes with patients. Her broad academic training has established her as an expert in empirically based practices. She has advanced training in a number of therapeutic modalities, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Psychodynamic and Behavioral Modalities. Her approach to therapy is collaborative in that she believes combining her knowledge of psychology with her client's self awareness and desire for growth is what leads to change. Her goal is to empower her clients as they confront challenges. Empowerment can occur by better understanding the relationship between thought, emotions and behavior, recognizing and moving through self defeating patterns, improving communication and self care skills, and taking responsibility for one's happiness. Dr. Rotzien believes a strong connection with her clients is what gives them the freedom to take risks. She relies heavily on humor to navigate the more difficult aspects of therapy. While Dr. Rotzien has specialized training in working with children and adolescents, she also has years of experience counseling adults.
Outside of the office, Dr. Rotzien is very active and enjoys cycling, running, scuba diving, traveling and reading. Hanging out with friends and family across the country, cooking and eating Oreos are favorite pastimes. Michigan winters are a challenge; however, the combination of cross country skiing and micro breweries has proven to be beneficial.
