Couples Therapy
Working with couples is an advanced technique that requires many hours of training. Our psychologists have been trained by the most renowned experts in the field through direct instruction in classes held across the country. This training, along with our utilization of the tools offered with these techniques have given us successful outcomes with hundreds of couples. The most predominant methods we use with couples center around Drs. John and Julie Gottman's research and interventions, Dr. Susan Johnson's Emotion Focused Therapy for couples and Drs. Ellen Bader and Peter Pearson's developmental model of relationships.
Most couples come to treatment with goals of improved communication, increased connectedness and intimacy, parenting skills, money differences and family struggles. Our interventions will increase your understanding of the relationship strengths and growth areas as well as offer you greater insight and understanding of your similarities and differences.
The most effective couple's work starts with an evaluation of the status of the relationship, identifying targeted areas of growth. Depending on your reason for seeking couple's therapy, your psychologist may choose to meet with you individually for the initial session, followed by couple's appointments. It is often helpful if each partner has their own individual therapist to process individual issues, as the couple's sessions are typically aimed at improving the functioning of the relationship itself.
